Anwar Ibrahim: Unjust Law

I just read a very interesting article on Malaysiakini this morning regarding how 'unjust laws can be' by the Pakatan Rakyat Chief Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Strangely that article seem to have evaporated into thin air!

Nevertheless, in that piece he refers to the Kampung Buah Pala case and stated his view that some laws are unjust. I tend to agree.

"One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law" - Martin Luther King Jr.

"An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so" - Mohandas Gandhi.

I fully understand the conflict between the Positivists (those who believe the Law must be followed no matter how evil it is) and the Naturalists (those who believe Law must conform to extrinsic norms of natural law); with this entry, I confirm my position that the Law must itself serve a purpose in society, and that the Law - as with all man-made concoctions - are able to be misused, abused and rendered corrupt.

What is Law? it is merely a bill passed through Parliament and with a majority vote - it becomes Law. What happens if the government of the day was voted in through illegitimate means? or through duress and threats? and with those ingredients a majority of MPs form the next government. Now, with their grip in power confirmed, they used that majority to pass laws such as allowing (for example) members of UMNO to bring their family and maid to Disneyland and have all expenses paid?

If that proposal is reduced into a Bill, went through Parliament and subsequently passed as law, no matter how obvious or scandalously a waste of tax payer dough it is, citizens must obey it as law.

That scenario has happened and with UMNO and BN at the helm, it will happen again. They will seek to legitimise their twisted distortions with 'legal' justifications and claim innocence that they are merely 'obeying the law'.

The Perak Speaker case is truly a good example. In their confidence that they will helm the west-coast states until kingdom come, they have allocated power so supreme unto the state assembly speaker that when that particular power is at long last used against them, they resorted to gangsterism, assault and battery to wrestle Pakatan's V. Sivakumar away from the Speaker's chair.

Accountability you say? Respect and honour? Amanah kepada Rakyat? UMNO and BN has none of this. The Khir Toyo Disney escapades illustrates how pompously apathetic they are in holding TRUST OF THE PEOPLE. He sheepishly said in his blog that he will repay the amount to the Selangor Government, but nonchalantly using the funds in the first place shows his utter contempt and lack of Amanah in safeguarding the Rakyat's money and trust.

Unjust laws are those which benefit a section of the community without consent from the rest, they are real and they are being used today against you. Give Pakatan Rakyat a chance to return the 'check and balance' doctrine of the Separation of Powers and doom these aristocrats to history.

Ancaman Telefon Murah

King of Pop Michael Jackson is dead: official

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but whose musical genius was overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals, died on Thursday. He was 50.

Jackson was pronounced dead after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest, Los Angeles coroner Fred Corral said. The cause of death was not known and an autopsy would likely take place on Friday, he said.

Jackson's sudden death had been reported earlier by U.S. media including the Los Angeles Times and the TMZ entertainment website, which said he was taken ill at his home and rushed to the hospital by paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived.

Known as the "King of Pop," for hits that included "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," Jackson's dramatic, one-gloved stage presence and innovative dance moves were imitated by legions of fans around the world.

His lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, made him one of the most successful entertainers of all time.

But Jackson's belief that "I am Peter Pan in my heart", his preference for the company of children, his friendship with a chimp, his high-pitched voice and numerous plastic surgeries also earned him critics and the nickname "Wacko Jacko."

Jackson, who had lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation, had been scheduled to launch a comeback tour from London next month.

Quincy Jones, who helped arrange the music on the album "Thriller" and produced the "Off the Wall" album, told MSNBC: "I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news."

"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

PARAMEDICS UNABLE TO REVIVE SINGER

TMZ said on its website that Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. "We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back," the site said.

The Los Angeles Times said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the singer's home before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital.

Jackson had been due to start a series of concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within minutes of going on sale in March.

There were concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

Outside the hospital in Los Angeles about 200 fans and reporters gathered on Thursday, waiting for confirmation of Jackson's death or condition.

Some fans were crying and hugging each other, and others were climbing atop fences to get a better look at a microphone stand where a news conference was supposed to take place.

"I hope he's gone to God, and I hope that he's free of all the troubles he's been plagued with," Tonya Blazer, 50, who said she had been a fan going back more than four decades to his days as a child star.

"I just feel like I'm paying tribute to him," said Dawn Burgess, 42, a fan who said she had posters of Michael pinned to her bedroom wall when she was a child.

CHILD STAR TO MEGASTAR

Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children. Five Jackson boys -- Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael -- first performed together at a talent show when Michael was 6. They walked off with first prize and went on to become a best-selling band, The Jackson Five, and then The Jackson 5.

Jackson made his first solo album in 1972, and released "Thriller" in 1982, which became a smash hit that yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million worldwide.

The next year, he unveiled his signature "moonwalk" dance move while performing "Billie Jean" during an NBC special.

In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999. The couple never lived together.

Jackson has three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism.

New Yorkers and tourists in the city's Times Square were shocked at the news of Jackson's death.

"I don't know what to say. It's sad, it's really, really sad," said Nicole Smith, an 18-year-old student from Brooklyn, New York, in Times Square. "My mother was a fan. I listened to his music."

"I'm shocked. I thought someone was lying to me when I first heard it. I was a fan from when he was a little boy and then he got weird," said Sue Sheider, 51, a teacher from Long Island.

Pengisytiharan kesihatan diperketat

Ketua Pengarah Kesihatan, Tan Sri Dr. Mohd.

ultrasn0w has been released by DevTeam! ultrasn0w is an iPhone 3.0 software unlock for iPhone 3G users only.

Here is how to install ultrasn0w:

1. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G 3.0: use either redsn0w or wait until QuickPwn is released (QuickPwn 3.0 will be released by Friday, you may want to wait until then scroll up to the top of the page and enter your e-mail to be notified once QuickPwn 3.0 is released)

2. Go to Cydia and add repo666.ultrasn0w.com to your sources

3. Reboot your iPhone 3G (T-mobile users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w)

4. Enjoy your iPhone 3G unlock, thanks to the Dev-Team that worked hard on it!

With the new OS 3.0 update a lot of people are stuck without an unlock, and they’re waiting for the iPhone Dev Team to create one. On Friday the iPhone Dev Team plans to release ultrasn0w. Ultrasn0w is the name of the Dev Team’s new iPhone 3G unlock software and it’s 100% free just like all the other Dev Team tools are. ultrasn0w will allow you to unlock your iPhone 3G on the new iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. Of course to unlock your AT&T iPhone 3G and install ultrasn0w you will need to jailbreak your iPhone 3G. The jailbreak does not appear to be out right now but Dev Team is working hard to bring it out for us. Please have patience and let the Dev Team do their work! Don’t ask when it’ll be out. I’ll make a post with download links and information on QuickPwn.com homepage, forums, and also update twitter, YouTube, send e-mail notifications to those who subscribed.

Waiting for ultrasn0w? Here’s what we know about it so far.

  • It’s safe to update to the current iPhone 3.0 baseband - ultrasn0w will work with it, but for future updates such as firmware 3.0.1 (or whichever # the next firmware is) you should hold off on updating and check here first to see if it’s safe to update. Apple may be able to make a baseband update that permanently locks your firmware just as they did with firmware 2.2.1 users.
  • ultrasn0w will only work with iPhone 3G - iPhone 2G users can still unlock their iPhone using BootNeuter
  • Just like yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w can be installed from Cydia (Repo URL has not been announced yet)

More information and a guide on how to unlock iPhone 3G with ultrasn0w will be posted once Dev Team has released ultrasn0w and the QuickPwn 3.0 jailbreak is released!

Important Points

1. If you want to unlock your iPhone 3G you must jailbreak iPhone 3G OS 3.0 with redsn0w

2. You must install iTunes 8.2 if you need to upgrade iPhone 3G to 3.0 firmware

3. Ultrasn0w works only on Baseband 04.26.08 irrespective of your iPhone OS (3.0/2.2.1/2.2)

4. T-Mobile USA users must turn off 3G mode.

How to Install Ultrasn0w From Cydia

1. Launch Cydia or Icy

Redsn0w one solution

Read the whole post in full before attempting anything!

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

Wassalam.

I Heart My City: Nadi and Ming's Kuala Lumpur

| Comments (0)
2083668588_e0771fae0f.jpgGreetings, city-lovers! Nadiah and Ming live in Kuala Lumpur, and they tell us that their city is bursting with things to do, see, and eat.

Want to see your city on IT? Copy and paste our list of fill-in-the-blank questions into an e-mail, fill in your answers, and send your responses to IntelligentTravel@ngs.org. And if you're still waiting for us to feature yours, fear not! We're going to keep posting as long as we keep getting them (please include photos and links!).

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is Our City
I Heart My City
The first place I take a visitor from out of town is The KLCC Twin Towers because that is the first thing people recognize.

When I crave random tidbits and knick knacks I always go to a night market where i can get anything from kimchi to DVDs.

To escape the crowds and hot city air I head to the Genting Highlands where I can drive really fast along abandoned winding roads.

If I want to eat banana leaf rice I go to Krishna Curry House in Section 14.

For complete quiet, I can hide away by having a picnic and reading a book at the various waterfalls and rivers just outside town.

If you come to my city, get your picture taken with any one of the random mat rempits (illegal motorcycle racers) that roam the streets after dark.

If you have to order one thing off the menu from Werner's in Changkat Bukit Bintang it has to be the rum raisin pancake.

Low Yat Plaza is my one-stop shop for great deals on electronics.

Locals know to skip Putrajaya and check out Petaling Jaya instead.

When I'm feeling cash-strapped I go to a kopitiam and order a white coffee and kaya toast.

For a huge splurge I go to the Spa Village KL.

Photo ops in my city include the night markets, the twin towers, and the decaying poorly maintained alleys, and the best vantage points are petaling street corner, the KL tower, and behind any mega-shopping complex.
3356838723_aa23c7f866.jpgIf my city were a celebrity it'd be Drew Barrymore, we don't take ourselves seriously and sometimes we're not the most efficient, but we're charming nonetheless.

The most random thing about my city is the way traffic and pedestrians interact, watch out!

My city has the most Bangladeshi/Nepali/Burmese/ Indonesian immigrant men.

My city has the most diversity between mainstream female groups: there are the transsexuals along chow kit and in the clubs, and the chaste Muslim women.

In my city, an active day outdoors involves hiking through the forest, which you can do at the Forest Research Institute.

My city's best museum is The Islamic Arts Museum.

My favorite jogging/walking route is around the KLCC park where you can stop and dip your toes in the splash pool afterwards.

For a night of dancing, go to Zouk or Velvet. Or, for live music, check out No Black Tie.

Any mamak (Indian Muslim) shop open 24/7 is the spot for late-night eats.

To find out what's going on at night and on the weekends, read the KLue website.

You can tell a lot about my city from the music playing in shopping malls because they tell you which festivals are approaching.

You can tell if someone is from my city if they speak Manglish with cantonese instead of hokkien words.

In the spring and summer you should carry an umbrella, because it rains every afternoon.

In the fall you should carry an umbrella, because it rains every afternoon.

In the winter you should see above, because when you're three degrees above the equator, there's no such thing as seasons.

A hidden gem in my city is the Petronas Art Gallery in KLCC, where admission is free.

For a great breakfast joint try Village Greenpark in Damansara Utama, they have good coconut rice with a variety of dishes.

Don't miss the Thaipusam Festival in February as Hindu devotees skewer themselves with metal objects carrying heavy loads to pay respects to Lord Muruga.

Just outside my city, you can visit Malacca, a historical city port once colonized by the British, Dutch and Portuguese.

2296635214_67de587a9b.jpgThe best way to see my city is by motorbike, horse, or on the back of a pack-slave. the pavement is so uneven they'll break your ankles, plus you'll sweat a bucket by walking. And if you sit in a car, you'll see the traffic jams and nothing else.

If my city were a pet it would be a cat like Garfield, it's slow, lazy, can occasionally surprise you and likes nothing better than to eat.

If I didn't live in a city, I'd live in a chalet on the side of the mountain with amazing views of the sea; a spot that has seasons and no traffic jams.

The best book about my city is The KL and Klang Valley Street Atlas, because without it, even the locals would be lost.

If you have kids, you won't want to miss the Petrosains Museum in KLCC, the Sunway Pyramid outdoor park, and if your kids are car nuts, the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Driving down the road downtown and having both a durian (a ~5kg, hard shelled, spiky, noxious-smelling fruit) and an unripe coconut fall on your car could only happen in my city.

My city should be featured on your cover or website because it's the only place in the world which you can see the continuous process of physical development actually happening, while enjoying some rather developed cusine. It isn't quite finished yet.

Apple's release iPhone 3Gs

unlocked 3G on 3.0

Big week!

As anyone reading this blog must already know, this is the big week where Apple releases their official 3.0 FW to the public (Wednesday), and then the new iPhone2,1 hardware, aka the iPhone 3GS (Friday).

On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts. The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer.

Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played :) That’s how the cat gets fed.

"Blogging" hobi terbaru aku kini...

So, grab a coffee, make yourself a comfortable and just relax. This probably could take a little while for you to read.

Close the stable door!

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 2.2.1 firmare from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Please note that the Windows version of QuickPwn has been updated to version 2.2.5-2

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
  2. Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
  6. These apps are suitable for the recent 2.2.1 release.
  7. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.
  8. Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly, please see the note towards the end of this post to easily fix this issue.

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Pwn and Jailbreak. This will add Cydia and Installer too.

Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband

This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2.1 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will ensure that you can still use “yellowsn0w” the iPhone 3G unlock application. To upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still give you any new stuff from 2.2.1

There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

Locked iPhone 3G

If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn to do the magic, ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything.

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Update to 2.2.1 with iTunes and run QuickPwn.

iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)

Sorry, no support at this time, but Redsn0w is being actively researched and developed.

Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6

As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.

  1. You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
  2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
  3. Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
  4. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
  5. Reboot your system!
  6. Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
  7. Download the disk image IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
  8. Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
  9. Reboot your system!
  10. Reattach your USB peripherals.

Blog temani malam ku...

Orang menyatakan, mengapa diperbesarkan isu Sisters In Islam?

(Justice Syed Ameer Ali, Short History of Saraceans Page No. 196). Rujuk artikel http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=440&Itemid=194

23 June 1999 - “Sisters in Islam support the appointment of women as judges for the following reasons:There is no specific and direct injuction in the Qur’an and Sunnah concerning this matter. There are only conflicting opinions of the jurists.”
http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=442&Itemid=194

27 February 2006 – “Sisters in Islam is opposed to any attempt by any government, public institution or the private sector, to force girls and/or women to cover or uncover their heads. In reference to the two recent cases of an employee of a five-star hotel’s decision to wear the tudung and the cutting of the schoolgirls’ tudungs in SMK Teluk Sentang, Kuala Krau, Temerloh, SIS maintains that the personal choices of the girls and women must be respected and no punitive measure or harsh treatment should be imposed.”Rujuk http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=400&Itemid=194

6. Menentang pandangan Ulama – Ust Abu Hassan Din Al-Hafiz apabila mengemukakan pandangan penggunaan cawat besi bagi mengelakkan rogol

16 February 2007 – “Sisters in Islam is shocked at recent comments by high-profile religious leaders this week blaming women for the allegedly uncontrollable sexual desires of men. Datuk Abu Hassan Din Al-Hafiz is recommending the use of chastity belts to prevent rape. What we are amazed with is that even Datuk Abu Hassan acknowledges not all men are potential rapists and that the majority of men out there are actually civilized and good.”

27 July 2005 – “Sisters in Islam views with concern the punitive action taken by the Malaysian authorities on Ayah Pin and members of the Sky Kingdom. This attempt has resulted in detention of the 48 followers - including a three-year-old boy -without bail pending re-mention of their case on July 28th, and a state-wide police search for Ayah Pin. In addition, some quarters - including religious leaders and politicians - have even called for the use of detention without trial on the followers.” http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=402&Itemid=194

8 January 2002 - Sisters in Islam (SIS) wish to point out that Islam neither invented nor encouraged polygamy. Unlimited polygamy was a pre-existing practice prior to the revelations of the Qur'an. The Qur'anic revelations relating to polygamy are clearly restrictive rather than permissive. http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=420&Itemid=194

10. Menentang tindakan JAIS dalam isu penangkapan pelayan bar

24 June 2000 - The decision of JAIS to charge a pub singer for insulting the religion of Islam by being in a premise that servers alcohol reflects the problem of using laws as a means to regulate the person's conscience, faith and lifestyle. Section 10 of the Selangor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment that makes it a crime for any person to insult Islam opens itself to abuse because it is a "catch all" provision that gives wide discretion for interpretation to enforcement officers. From the JAIS action, it appears that any Muslim, found in premises where sins are committed by other Muslims or non-Muslims, could be charged for "insulting Islam". As has been pointed out, does this mean that a Muslim who is in an airplane or a restaurant or a hotel where alcohol is served or in a supermarket where alcohol and pork are sold is "insulting Islam"? Could it also mean that it is an offence for Muslims to live with non-Muslims housemates whose belief and lifestyle could be regarded as sinful in Islam?
http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=429&Itemid=194

11. Membenarkan hukum perayaan Kongsi-Raya dan meminta Ulama’ Malaysia mempromosikannya!

16 June 2006 - SISTERS in Islam wish to urge the ulama in Malaysia to play an active role as bridge-builders among people of different faiths. They should take heed of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's personal commitment that as a Muslim Malaysian leader, he is responsible not just to fellow Muslims, but also to Malaysians who profess other religions as well.
http://www.sistersinislam.org.my/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=431&Itemid=194

Riders get naked for a weekend of anti-car cycling demonstrations

Up to 2,000 cyclists are expected to put buttock against saddle for rides in towns and cities around the UK organised by the World Naked Bike Ride group

Picture the scene: you're wandering through a city street this weekend and a group of cyclists pedal idly past, pinging their bells and smiling broadly. Oh yes, one more thing – they're all naked.

A hallucination? No, just the latest event organised by the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) group.

Beginning today and carrying on through the weekend, anything up to 2,000 riders are expected to place unadorned buttock against saddle for rides in seven towns and cities around England and Wales.

The largest naked cycle is scheduled for London, with organisers expecting around 1,000 nude or near-nude riders to set off from Hyde Park at 3pm tomorrow. And smaller events are planned for York, Manchester and Southampton today, Cardiff and Sheffield tomorrow and Brighton on Sunday. London will see its sixth annual event, after beginning in 2004 when a hardy and not easily embarrassed group of 58 pioneers took to the streets.

They are just part a worldwide network of naked rides planned for the weekend. The WNBR website lists more than 140 destinations, from Adelaide to Zaragoza.

For people previously unfamiliar with the global naked cycling movement who happen to catch sight of one of these fleshy, two-wheeled processions, the first question – "What on earth?" – is inevitably soon followed by another: why?

Handily, the WNBR has a page of FAQs, one of which is the inevitable: "Why are you cycling naked?" The answer is:

To celebrate cycling and the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against oil dependency.

As well as the pro-bike, anti-car message there is of course the sheer toddler-like thrill of shedding your clothes and cycling around a big city. As the website also mentions, "most riders also find it exhilarating, liberating, empowering".

The FAQ page is also a mine of information of other key points, such as whether riding naked is uncomfortable (no – less chafing from clothes, apparently); if it is unhygienic (no, but take a cloth if you're worried); and, as the website puts it: What if I'm not conventionally attractive? All the better, they reassure.

The site also has links to photos of previous events – perhaps best not clicked on to in a crowded office.

Are you going to be taking part this year? Let us know, and induct us into the joys of naked cycling.

Next week guardian.co.uk launches its new Bike blog, as part of Ethical Living. It will be followed, on 24 June, by the first edition of a monthly cycling podcast.

Doing it the Lim Goh Tong’s Way.

1. Never make language barrier a limitation to succeed. Lim Goh Tong did not speak or write in English. He spoke Hokkien in his native land China, and after coming to Malaysia, he learned Bahasa Malaysia, Cantonese & Mandarin. But that did not stop him to negotiate one of the biggest business contracts in the country.

2. Be polite, humble and respectful to others. If you can rub shoulders with tycoons, politicians and high officials, ask yourself, can you get along well too with hawkers and manual workers? Often times, success goes to our heads and we forget where we came from and our hardship seems to be a forgotten past.

3. When it comes to appointment and meeting, have a habit to be punctual. Better still, come 5 to 10 minutes early. Malaysians have a very weird habit when it comes to appointments, interviews and meeting. Don’t be one. Make punctuality your personal and business principle.

Do not make excuse to cancel appointments just because the person is not important. Also, a good advice is that, if you want to know if a person will be a good friend and business partner, watch if he arrives on the appointed time when you set a date or meeting. If you are late for job interview when you can be early, know that you will not make a good employee.

4. Live a disciplined, simple life. Get up early from bed to start your day. You will see prosperity coming your way.

5. Make effort to carry something that you can write or jot down when you have anything coming to mind. Lim Goh Tong used small notebook. Now you are spoiled with choices when it comes to note taking - PDA, mobile phone, note book and so on. Do not make excuses. Also, organize your day with a diary or personal organizer. Always create a to do list.

6. Be bold yet cautious (the Chinese say ‘dan da xin xi‘). Try things that have never been done before. Challenge the norm of ways of doing work or job. Be willing to take that risk. A reward is waiting at the end of it.

7. Believe the power of conviction. If you make a decision and you believe that is a strong one, go ahead with it, no matter what you are up against. Believe in yourself.

8. Don’t make enemies. Avoid stepping on other people’s toes which is quite a norm in business and corporate world. People who do this will not last long. People who take short cut will have their success short lived. You have witnessed this. People say sometimes this can’t be avoided. That’s a lie. Under all circumstances, stay away from it.

9. If you build a successful business and organization, always believe that the most valuable asset of a company is its people. It is the people that make up the organization. It is the people that run the organization. It is the people that makes things happen.

10. If you don’t have benefit and exposure to modern management, never doubt you can run a company as big as Microsoft. Good education is essential, but lack of education and training is never a barrier to become a boss to the smartest people on the planet.

11. Employ a person or make business with a person when you trust him or her. If you do not trust them; don’t employ and don’t make business with them.

12. Do good to others; you will be rewarded somehow. Learn to give first, and receive later.

13. Prepare for personality makeover. If you are shy and quiet (like Lim Goh Tong when he was 20s), learn to be articulate and more extrovert. Banish the shyness and the inferiority complex. Otherwise, you will not get that job, or awarded that business contract. If you are rude, learn to be polite.

14. Be grateful for what you have. Life has been kind to us. Hence we should treasure our life and make it a meaningful one. Drive yourself harder and become more committed to work.

United setuju lepas Ronaldo

RONALDO

- Agensi

Thanks for taking part in our volunteer survey! Here are the results!

Many of you took part in our first volunteer survey - muchos gracias! We took these results and shared them with the volunteer industry. Here's what you said:
  • You like to help out at home. A large number of people who volunteer abroad have also volunteered in their home country (60%), with another 33% interested in volunteering who haven't yet found the right opportunity.
  • Your main motivation is to help out. Travelers looking to volunteer abroad want to be useful (most important to 38%) and have a personal learning experience (most important to 21%), while convenience is surprisingly not important to 48% of the respondents. In terms of activities, 62% of respondents cited they wanted to do humanitarian work, 56% wanted to do conservation and teaching, followed by community development at 53% and building at 28%.
  • You stay a while. Fifty-one percent of you who have volunteered go for at least 1 month, and 76% of you travel at least two weeks.

Many of the residents have never ever seen a doctor before. Along with you will be a team of 20 doctors, medical students and volunteers. Also to help you is documentary producer Trent O'Donnell.

The winner could have his or her documentary broadcast on Nat Geo Adventure! That's right! The holy grail for documentary makers could be yours!

Take on this assignment!

Deadline for applications July 5, 2009

Speaking of travel insurance, make sure not to neglect travel insurance on your travels. We used to think insurance was kinda optional, but bought cause we kinda like the guys at World Nomads. =) Three hospital visits in Norway and a four night hospital stay in Hong Kong later, our team sure is glad we bought insurance!

Don't stress out your family and give them (more) white hair. Get travel insurance for your next trip.

How compatible are as travel buddies to your friends?

Want to see how similar you are in travel styles to your friends? Why not invite them to join you on TravelBrain and share their knowledge with the community?
